Susan been working over the past twenty years to fine tune and find ways to make her hobby, now turned business, easy & something everyone can do. She is passionate about composting worms, recycling, garbage and soil microbes that build soil with the plants! Her favorite saying is, "There is no such thing as a weed! If we feed the soil it will feed us."
After twenty years of worm composting, experimenting and testing many different systems, Susan invented the Continuous Airflow "Worm Hut". This system provides optimal airflow and moisture management, easy to use, and most importantly is super easy to harvest. Everyone who has used plastic systems knows what I'm talking about 🙂
The 1st Worm Hut, made 10 years ago, is still in operation today! The fabric is breathable, waterproof Cordura and nylon with heavy duty zippers and nylon thread sewn with an industrial grade machine.
Susan is an avid student of "Life in the Soil" microbiology, with the help of her microscope, and soil regeneration practices. She has studied under Dr. Elaine Ingham, world renowned Soil Microbiologist, Gabe Brown, Matt Powers & many others. She is a Certified Soil Advocate for Kiss The Ground regenerative ag. Susan is an international Advisor, Consultant, and Educator, and has consulted to the three largest commercial worm farms in North America.
In her role as a Community Educator with Wild Voices for Kids, Susan has presented over 100 "Fun With Worms" K - 3 school programs. The Jr. & Sr. High School presentations focused on soil science, the biological synergies of the Soil Food Web, their interdependence on each other, the factors that destroyed the soil and what we need to do the regenerate it so that it can provide us with nutrient dense foods. These sessions included the need for composting worms as a key factor in nutrient recovery, self-sustainability and climate change mitigation. The students and adults love her easy-to-understand and hands on approach!
Along with the focus on teaching school children, Susan also does various community and garden presentations and conference speaker. Being an educator at heart, the vision has expended into regenerative agriculture. Susan enjoys encouraging and helping growers/farmers transition from conventional agricultural practices to biological farming and seeing how rewarding and profitable these practices can be.
"We don't have a fertility issue on our planet, we have a biology issue".
Her most exciting accomplishment to date is seeing one of her clients apply vermiextract on a section of their sand "lawn", cover with rotting hay, and in a short 18 months the micro-organisms and weeds made 1" of beautiful soil. Soil scientists say it takes 100 - 500 years to make 1" of soil.
Susan has a degree in nursing, works part-time as a Financial Representative, and loves sharing her passion of worm composting. Susan and her husband, Ken, are enjoying their retirement in the beautiful hamlet of Kragmont, in the east Kootenays of British Columbia. She loves seeing the smiles on customers faces when they talk about how much they enjoy their worms.
